Corona, Deforestation, Inequality, Threatened Democracy: Brazil under BolsonaroÂ
With more than 4 million cases, Brazil is one of countries most affected by the coronavirus. During the coronavirus pandemic, far-right President Bolsonaro has dismissed the danger and sabotaged quarantine measures and efforts by state governments.
The pandemic has exacerbated several of Brazil’s chronic problems, such as its massive inequality, making Black people 40% more likely of dying from the coronavirus.
Furthermore, deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has surged, and homicide rates have gone up. Brazil’s economy is expected to contract by 6 percent this year.
Additionally, Bolsonaro and his allies are using the prospect of military intervention to protect his grip on power.
This Wednesday, we will talk about what is happening in Brazil, including questions such as: why Brazil has so many coronavirus cases, how Bolsonaro is dealing with the crisis and how minorities are being affected by his mismanagement.
Joining us is Celso Rocha, who’s a sociologist and analyst for the Brazilian Central Bank. He holds a degree in Political Science from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and a PhD in Sociology from Oxford University. Barros is also a columnist for Folha de São Paulo.
