Discussing Social Issues with Someone with Different Views – December 2nd

When: Wednesday, December 2nd
Time: 8pm
Where: Google Meets

A recurring question in many of GFN’s meetings is how to effectively communicate with someone who you disagree with on social issues. Whether that is speaking with your grandma about Zwarte Piet, your classmate about COVID-19 measures, or a friend about LGBTQIA+ acceptance, this is a challenge we’ve all encountered.

In this meeting, we will discuss this issue. We will start with a short presentation about the experiences of people who are ambivalent about Zwarte Piet and the psychological influences behind this. We will then present some ideas about how to effectively have a conversation with someone you disagree with. We will have plenty of time at the end for an open discussion on the topic… so bring your own ideas as well!

We will use Google Meets for the discussion, link to be posted nearer the time.

DISCLAIMER:

  • Issues like racism, homophobia and transphobia may be brought up in the presentation and discussion.
  • We are not advocating that discussion is always a sensible form of action. Discrimination and oppression is not “up for discussion”. Sometimes the safest and most appropriate option is to not engage in discussion with fascists and bigots.
