GFN x GFN Book Club Pride Edition: The Colour Purple (Alice Walker)

When: Wednesday, June 16th
Time: 8pm
Where: Location and meet-up address on facebook event

Dear book enthusiasts and feminists and fellow queers,

On this collaborative event between the GFN and the GFN book club on the occasion of Pride Month, we will have an outdoor meeting in the Oosterpark (see map) with a small presentation on queer literature in general, and more specifically the book ‘The Color Purple’ by Alice Walker. The discussion will still be accessible for those who have not read it, and everybody is welcome to participate!

The bookclub members will come prepared some talking points to get the conversation started on the book, but also more broadly on our favorite queer media. Feel free to bring your own questions and thoughts!

CW: ‘The Colour Purple’ by Alice Walker is a powerful commentary on racism, sexism, class and compulsory heterosexuality.

If you read the book or watch the film in preparation for this meeting, please be warned that the story features sexual and racial violence and abuse, especially in the first part. ‘The Color Purple’ is a relatively short and quick read.

From supersummary.com: “The Color Purple is an epistolary novel—a novel told in letter form—in which Alice Walker traces the gradual liberation of Celie, a poor, Black woman who must overcome abuse and separation from her beloved sister Nettie. Set in the South and an unnamed African country during the 1930 to 1940s, the novel is a study in the ways in which Black women use their faith, relationships, and creativity to survive racial and sexual oppression. The novel was critically acclaimed, garnering Walker the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the National Book Award for fiction.”
