Community Newroz Celebration – March 23rd
WHEN: Wednesday, March 23rd
TIME: 17:00
WHERE: Noorderplantsoen Pavilion (Kruissingel 1, 9712 XN Groningen)
Join us for this year’s Newroz celebration!
🌱🌺 Winter is coming to an end, leaving time for one of the most beautiful seasons – spring – which stands for new life, blossoming and a new beginning for nature. This time of year is special for the Kurds (and others in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, the Balkans, and South Asia) because they celebrate their New Year on March 21st.
🌸What was celebrated over 2,600 years ago as a celebration of the end of a harsh winter and the flowering of nature evolved into a celebration of political resistance to oppression and despotism. Due to local and global politics and cultural, ethnic and linguistic bans in the occupied areas of Kurdistan, this tradition became increasingly politicized and today symbolizes the cohesion of the Kurdish people against the oppression and persecution of their culture and rights. Today the Newroz festival is an important part of Kurdish identity.
🦋In the spirit of this year‘s Newroz, the Groningen Feminist Network invites you to a social community gathering – celebrating new life, togetherness, solidarity and resistance. There will be some snacks, drinks, music and games. We will also be DIY‘ing some wildflower seed-balls together.
‼️PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BLANKET TO SIT ON AND CUTTLERY‼️
Bring your friends and enjoy a nice spring celebration with us! See you there 👀👋🏼
⚠️Please remember safety measures – test yourself before and keep distance!
EDIT: as mentioned above, one of our members who is kurdish is taking intiative to organise this event and she will shed light to what Newroz means for her culture from her experience and perspective. This event is open for everyone and there will be space to discuss your own cultural perspectives of course, however the organiser of this event is kurdish and will not speak for anyone else in this regard.
