Groningen Climate Action Fortnight 2020
The Groningen Climate Action Fortnight 2020 consists of two weeks of climate-crisis related actions and events with the aim of raising awareness, building lasting local networks of solidarity, and achieving local, but also systematic change.
The climate crisis has fallen from the global political agenda. The media has gone silent: what we hear is but a fraction of the reality unfolding across the world. Many parts of the Earth are currently on fire. On the East Coast of the U.S. the sky is blood red with unprecedented wild-fires. This Summer here in the Netherlands we experienced the longest heat wave on record. Both local and governmental institutions, pandering to both economic and political elites as well as our global economic and political system, have failed to address the climate crisis.
With these two weeks, and what comes after, we hope to help reinvigorate the climate movement – especially here in Groningen. Building local grassroots politics and activism is absolutely key to doing this. Local action is the wellspring of the people power necessary for change.
Together we hope to emphasise the various implications and effects of the climate crisis. That is, the way the climate crisis and struggle intersects and interlinks with many other areas of struggle, from anti-racism and de-colonialism to feminism and working-class struggles, more generally.
Various local activist groups – together forming the Groningen Activist Coalition – have joined in collaboration for the fortnight of actions and events. See ‘Hosts’ below for these groups.
